Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks second among cancers in Hong Kong. In 2019, there were 5,556 new cases, accounting for 15.8% of the total number of new cancer cases in Hong Kong. There were annually 2,174 deaths, which makes it the second cancer killer in Hong Kong second to lung cancer.1However, CRC is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.2
Research shows, when CRC is detected and diagnosed in its early stages, the 5-year relative survival rate is about 90%.3 In light of the values of early prevention of CRC, the 2014 Policy Address of Hong Kong has promulgated a population-based “Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme” for higher risk groups, which was subsidized by the Hong Kong Government. The programme subsidizes asymptomatic Hong Kong residents aged between 50 and 75 to receive screening service in private sector for prevention of CRC.
This, however, inevitably leaves out certain groups of people who are still high risk of CRC and rely on their own finance to prevent this highly preventable cancer.

There is a new technology that requires only a home-based self sampling of stool, which is then used for multiplex methylation specific PC to detect abnormally methylated CRC marker genes – SDC2, ADHFE1, and PPP2R5C. These genes are strong indicators of CRC and precancerous lesions.
